What is neuro-affirming therapy?

Neuro-affirming therapy refers to talk therapy services that anticipate and accommodate differences in behavior, thinking, and communicating.

In practice, this might look like…

  • Acknowledging both the struggles and strengths of having a particular diagnosis - for instance, ADHD, Autism, or AuDHD

  • Inviting clients to give feedback about their sensory needs (for instance, the lighting in the therapy room)

  • Encouraging clients to use fidgets and/or move their bodies as they need to during therapy

  • Asking for clarity about people’s meanings or intentions rather than jumping to conclusions

  • Appreciating that in spite of the hierarchal nature of therapy, respect and feedback can and should go both ways
