Neuro-Affirming Therapy
What is neuro-affirming therapy?
Neuro-affirming therapy refers to talk therapy services that anticipate and accommodate differences in behavior, thinking, and communicating.
In practice, this might look like…
Acknowledging both the struggles and strengths of having a particular diagnosis - for instance, ADHD, Autism, or AuDHD
Inviting clients to give feedback about their sensory needs (for instance, the lighting in the therapy room)
Encouraging clients to use fidgets and/or move their bodies as they need to during therapy
Asking for clarity about people’s meanings or intentions rather than jumping to conclusions
Appreciating that in spite of the hierarchal nature of therapy, respect and feedback can and should go both ways
