Does this sound like you?

  • I’ve been diagnosed with pretty much everything in the book, but nothing quite fits.

  • I can’t remember much of my childhood.

  • Everything I do and am is wrong.

  • Everyone leaves me.

  • Throughout my life, I’ve fantasized about disappearing or going to sleep and never waking up.

  • I struggle with huge mood swings and don’t always understand what causes them.

  • I experience periods where I “zone out” or float above my body.

  • I’ve never been sure of who I am or what I want.

If you are experiencing a mental health emergency, please call 988 (U.S.) or see my homepage for more resources.

What is Complex PTSD?

Although not in the DSM (yet), Complex PTSD is a form of post-traumatic stress disorder in which many traumas have occurred over the course of a lifetime, typically beginning in childhood.

CPTSD can cause difficulties into adulthood in multiple areas, including…

  • Difficulty trusting others

  • Difficulty trusting yourself

  • Low self-esteem

  • Muddled sense of identity

  • Relationship problems

  • Hard time reaching your full potential for success

Can Therapy help Complex PTSD?

YES, therapy is foundational in the healing process of many folks with CPTSD.

And at Grounded Counseling, this is how we approach therapy for clients with CPTSD (not necessarily in this order):

  • Relational Healing - Creating a trusting relationship with clients with CPTSD based on mutual respect

  • Establishing Nervous System Regulation Skills - Using interventions based in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Mindfulness

  • Safety Planning - Safety plans may involve not only what to do when clients are suicidal, but also what to do when they have an emotional flashback, or are tempted to engage in self-harm, or disordered eating behaviors.

  • Processing Trauma using Internal Family Systems / Parts Work - When clients are ready for deeper healing, we use IFS (aka “parts work”) to address parts of them that may be emotionally stuck in the past.

  • Building out a holistic treatment plan - If CPTSD clients don’t already have a team of medical and mental healthcare professional to rely on, we can discuss and refer out to other services to ensure their care is well-rounded and addressing all relevant areas.
